Bougainvillea Thorne a sun- and party-loving character inspired by Chip Bee Gardens

Bougainvillea Thorne lives in Chip Bee Gardens. Her friends call her Boo. She loves the sun and bright things. She's a people person: warm, positive, magnetic, charming. If there's a party, you can bet she's there.

Introducing Bougainvillea Thorne

Bougainvillea Thorne, known to her friends as Boo, appeared in my sketchbook recently. She is the combination of two sources of inspiration. The first was a character created by Manuel Arenas in his book Yaxin the Faun and the second is a particularly prolific bougainvillea plant in Jalan Kelabu Asap in my neighbourhood, Chip Bee Gardens.

Bougainvillea/Boo is one of the many characters that emerged from my imagination as a result of a month-long drawing challenge (Inktober/Peachtober) I participated in this October. As you can see below, she was originally in black and white. For the greeting card, I added colour which, I must admit, now does full justice to her appearance and personality. Also, she is marking the holiday season by wearing a Christmas tree bauble as an earring.

She is pictured here with her cousins, Sprout, Bud and Blossom Springfield who were also created during the drawing challenge. Here are the the 31-odd drawings of characters and places that I made during the October challenge.

Bright, colourful, fun and full of life

I've since had time to fill in more details of Bougainvillea/Boo's personality. Her favourite colour is shocking pink and her all-time favourite designer is Zandra Rhodes.

Her job perfectly reflects her personality - she designs bright colourful installations for parties, storefronts, weddings and events that evoke a sense of fun and joie de vivre.
