Inktober/Peachtober 2022 Days 23-31
Here's the final instalment of fun and folly for Inktober/Peachtober 2022.
The drawings for Days 1-22 are to be found here.
This little person is called Sprout. And she looks cross because she's had enough with people asking to touch her hair. And yes, those are mushrooms growing on her shoulders, can you please stop talking about it.
She's the youngest in the family of Springfields, her brother Bud is the middle child and Blossom is the eldest.
In the castle, the old dishevelled king shuffled around, wondering when the floating rock would come upon a settlement, so that he could replenish his cheese larder and buy treats for his cats.
This is WNC*22, pronounced WINK22. It's a cleanupbot. It loves cleaning - cleaning makes everything right, it believes. When not cleaning, it sits by its birdhouse and waits for birdfriends to visit.
Today's prompt 'land' made me think of a Grand Canyon type landscape, vast and harsh. This then brought to mind Taiwan's rock formations of heads and sandals which I visited as a child. Putting all this together, I drew a rock sculpture of a face that could pass as a Native American man, as Native American cosmology (and that of other indigenous peoples) is so strongly tied to land, and to notions of land that are distinct from that of colonial settlers.
One of my fave places in Singapore is the big aquarium on Sentosa. I could watch the fish for hours. All that swooping around, the bright shiny colours, the schooling behaviour. I wish I could capture that all in my drawings.
Introducing Bougainvillea Thorne, cousin to Sprout, Bud and Blossom (above). Her close friends call her Boo. She loves the sun and bright colours. Her favourite colour is shocking pink and her all-time fave clothes designer is Zandra Rhodes. She believes that life is short so we should have as much fun as possible.
After Inktober/Peachtober, Bougainvillea took on a life of her own. I wrote about her loves - the sun, bright colours and parties - and her design career here.
I also made a holiday card featuring Bougainvillea and you can download it for free.
Here's a tip when downloading the card: type $0 in the field for amount to pay (you are given the choice to add another amount, by default).
The thing that stumped me about this prompt was how to make it interesting. I kept drawing whales on their own, and then I hit upon the idea of drawing a whale in the sky. I added the clouds (still need to figure out how to ink in clouds without making them look hairy) and presto, a flying whale.
You know that feeling when you want to squeeze something you love to death? But you know you have to restrain yourself? This drawing is about that.
Final day of the month-long drawing challenge! It's been such a fun adventure sharing my drawings and hearing what friends and followers have to say about them. It's such a pleasure when something I draw strikes a chord with someone.
I've gotten a lot out of this drawing challenge, in particular, making a habit of completing drawings, something I struggle with. I love coming up with ideas and making sketches but am not so good at completing them. This drawing challenge provided the context in which doing so was meaningful and fun. Read about it here.
By the way, this drawing has nothing to do with the prompt for today 'sleepy' because I couldn't figure out what to draw. So, here's an alternative drawing whose title is 'so annoying', a phrase I use a lot!
