Inktober 2023 Day 31 Fire

My first thought when I saw this prompt was of the destruction wrought by wildfires across the world, exacerbated by climate change. But it occurred to me that fire has another more positive aspect that we don’t often think about. It clears dead organic matter, makes soil more fertile, burns away certain seed coverings to enable germination, creates an ecosystem that allows certain vulnerable creatures to thrive, and gets rid of invasive species of plants and animals. I wanted my drawing of fire to reflect this and that’s why he’s holding a tree on a mound of earth in his hands.

Also, I wanted to create the personification of fire, not as a raging adult, but as a sensitive young person. That’s why his expression is solemn and intent. And he’s unclothed to symbolise vulnerability (yes, he’s a naked flame).
