I love waiting
I used to hate waiting but ever since I started carrying a sketchbook, it has become something to look forward to.
Dinner partner late? Ooh, I get to sketch.
Meeting moved to a later hour? Time to doodle.
Two of the results are shown below - done while waiting for my father to arrive for dinner. These unexpected sketching sessions are spontaneous and spare. They stop me from fussing and from wanting a good outcome because I may not have time to complete the drawing.
I think there is a life lesson in this - for me to stop worrying about the end result and to enjoy the present. And drawing really does keep me in the present. I observe what I am drawing, time slows down, the incessant chatter in my head disappears and I am lost in the flow of marking marks.
Every moment that I can use to draw is a moment of mindfulness.
So, if you're on your way to meet me, don't worry about being late. You're actually doing me a favour. I'll be sitting in a quiet spot drawing, and savouring this precious little treat.
